Useful Information About This Desert Excursion from Marrakech

Marrakech to Erg Chigaga Desert tour

We don’t recommend this luxury Marrakech to Erg Chigaga tour for very young children. Medical help is hard to reach from the desert camp at Erg Chigaga. Also, the Marrakech to Erg Chigaga 3 Days tour does not run in July or August.

You won’t need any special gear for this trip. Still, if you’re traveling in summer, bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. For camel rides, longer pants are a better choice than shorts or skirts. Light sports shoes also work better than sandals, because sandals can slip off easily.

Desert nights get cold in winter, so pack layers, a warm jacket, and a hat. Also, sand gets into almost everything. If you’re bringing costly gear, keep it in a zip-lock bag to protect it.

If you need more details about this Marrakech to Erg Chigaga trip, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

Marrakech to Erg chigaga tour

Day 1:Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Zagora

We begin our adventure from your accommodation in Marrakech, the vibrant “Red City” nestled at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. As we ascend the mountains, enjoy panoramic views and pass through scattered Berber villages that seem untouched by time.

Midway, we stop to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, a stunning 11th-century ksar (fortified village) famous for its role in many Hollywood films.

From there, we continue to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where we’ll visit some of the largest film studios in the world.

Our journey then follows the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with endless palm groves and ancient kasbahs. We arrive in Zagora, home to the remnants of an Almoravid fortress. Dinner and overnight stay at a traditional hotel.

Day 2 :Zagora – Tamegroute – M’Hamid – Erg Chigaga

After breakfast, we drive south toward Tamegroute, a small town known for its green pottery and one of Morocco’s oldest libraries, housing rare manuscripts and religious texts.

We continue along the Draa Valley to M’Hamid, a quiet and remote village marking the end of the paved road beyond lies the vast Sahara.

From here, a 4×4 vehicle takes us off-road into the heart of the desert. You’ll soon witness the majestic Erg Chigaga dunes rise from the horizon. These are some of the highest and most isolated dunes in Morocco.

Enjoy a camel ride at sunset, then spend the evening in a nomadic Berber camp, where you’ll have dinner under the stars and experience the rhythm of traditional drumming by the campfire.

Day 3 : Erg Chigaga – Iriki Lake – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – High Atlas – Marrakech

Wake up early to catch the peaceful sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, we begin our off-road drive across the dry Iriki Lake, once home to migratory birds and now a vast, lunar-like expanse.

We continue to the quiet Berber town of Foum Zguid, then stop in Taznakht, a famous center for traditional Berber carpets and weaving.

From here, we return to Marrakech via scenic oases and mountain passes, once again crossing the High Atlas Mountains. We arrive in Marrakech by the evening, where your unforgettable desert adventure ends.

Based on our experience, we grouped the top-rated hotels and desert camps in Morocco into luxury, mid-range, and budget categories, so it’s easier to find the right fit for your group.

  • Classic Comfort  (3/4 * Riads & Camps):
This category includes authentic private rooms and tents with private bathrooms, cozy beds, and air conditioning in most properties. In the desert camps, the en-suite tents come with fans and gas heaters during winter. You’ll also find useful amenities like on-site restaurants, terraces, Wi-Fi, and sometimes a small pool. The tents do not offer wide open views, though you can still enjoy the desert setting from your window.
  • Affordable Luxury: (4 * Riads & Camps) :
These properties offer a higher level of comfort, with quality service and tasteful design, while keeping a more relaxed feel than 5-star stays. The suites often blend modern style with Moroccan charm and include well-furnished interiors. Many also have fitness areas, and some include spa services. In the desert, the en-suite tents in this category come with air conditioning, which makes your stay more pleasant in both summer and winter. They also offer better views, with the interior facing the glamping area and nearby sand dunes.
  • Deluxe Luxury (5-star riads and camps) :
These hotels and riads offer a premium stay, with elegant decor, excellent service, and prime locations. You can expect 24-hour concierge support, room service, and personal attention throughout your visit. Many also include luxury spas, fine dining, fitness centers, large pools, and bars. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, with high-quality bedding, modern features, and, in some cases, views of the medina, valleys, or mountains. In the desert, the glamping tents are styled with Moroccan decor and soft Berber rugs. They also include private terraces with beautiful views over the golden dunes. Some camps even have a swimming pool, so your desert stay feels comfortable and enjoyable all year.

All of our accommodations are decorated in Moroccan style and kept clean and well maintained. Guests also enjoy complimentary breakfast and often mention the warm, helpful staff. After a full day of exploring, these stays give you the perfect place to rest and recharge.
